… get Arctic Monkeys?

Downloaded and listened to Arctic Monkeys.

I don’t see what all the fuss is about.

It’s competent rock with a lot of borrowing that doesn’t shake off its influences very convincingly. Some tracks have the surf bit, the ska bit, the jangly bit and the teen angst bit, all one after the other. They can’t really sing. Whole phrases and riffs are “borrowed.”

So why are they so big? The “working class lads who came from nowhere but could have come from down the street” factor helps. So does their youth. The fact they are teenagers who clearly feel misunderstood (why else would the album be called “Whatever people say I am, that is what I am not?) never goes astray.

The fact they are not anti-establishment or anti-art makes it easy for anyone to embrace them. The fact they rail against the stuffiness they perceive among their elders helps too.

In short, working-class lads undaunted enough to be somewhere between rebellious and determined, capable of compiling a catchy tune that articulates their peers’ worries without threatening anyone.

Kind of Nirvana lite.

If that isn’t a recipe for success I do not know what is.

And you know what? It will be again!

And again.

And I have no idea if it can ever excite me again the way it would have done when I was 15.
