Stay Cool Dad

Satire is the best explanation? by Simon Sharwood

I grew up in the age of “hair metal” when bands with far too much hair, unfeasible numbers of layered garments and a weird “we look bad but really play pop” posture that made them simultaneously cool and lame.

Explaining this stuff to anyone who wasn’t there is hard.

At least unless you visit this link.

Follow it and you will find downloads of two Billy and The Boingers tracks. The Boingers were originally called Deathtongue and come from a comic strip by Berkely Breathed called Bloom County. The comic often verged on genius and happily Breathed revived it as a weekly.

The Boingers were a hair metal parody par excellence. And these tracks are the best way I think I will ever find to explain the weirdness that was the mid 1980s pop music scene.

Enjoy.
