Globalise music now! by Simon Sharwood

Granddady’s new album is out, but can I download it?

Probably because whichever record company gets the rights to distribute their stuff here isn’t allowed to or isn’t interested in making it available on the same day the rest of the world gets their hands on it.

It is patently ridiculous that an accident of geography should determine my rights, or otherwise, to download a particular set of bits.

It is even worse that the price differs from country to country.

By the time my kids start buying music online, I sincerely hope music and other digital media have been globalised with a single release date and a single price. And I hope that price reflects global affordability, not just US-based pricing.

If not, the market will continue to speak for itself by behaving in ways that content industries insist are illegal. And I’ll be one of them.
