Exposure by Simon Sharwood

I’m getting a great deal of pleasure from The Go-Betweens at the moment.

And it makes me remember the first time I saw the band: on Channel Nine’s Sunday program, at some point in the late 80s.

Sunday is a pretty highbrow affair aimed at adults. I was probably watching half out of boredom and half in anticipation of the sport shows that followed.

But the fact my introduction to the band came in such an odd place strikes me as somehow important. If my family had not been one interested in serious current affairs, I might never have encountered The Go Betweens.

I wasn’t led to water. I was exposed.

At this point I feel like I want to say I should expose the kids to everything and anything in the hope they can take away an encounter like mine that gives them such lasting pleasure.

But I cannot say it with a straight face, because I’ve been carefully NOT mentioning it might be worth watching the news this week, for fear of having to explain the middle easy conflict to a four year old.

Exposure is a good idea. Now I gotta figure out how to put it into practise …
