Stay Cool Dad

The answer is also the problem by Simon Sharwood

I’ve been listening to The Polyphonic Spree over the last couple of days.

It’s a huge (25+ members)  band formed by former Tripping Daisies members with the aim of creating a “symphonic pop” sound.

They deliver, I reckon. The ten-minute plus compositions, backed by a 10-person choir, sound fab. And as a conscious stretch beyond the (surely) tired three-to-four  minute verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus that is so dominant in pop they are a refreshing change.

Of course the kids will hate it. Probably until they are my age.

So the answer to my boredom with modern music becomes a problem in terms of taking me beyond something recognisable/appreciable to the kids.

Of course you gotta expect that. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t also make me worry about how to prevent alienation from my kids’ tastes.

For the interim, at least, there seems to be one answer. The boy loves the Go-Betweens song “German Farmhouse” because there’s a line in it about castles.

Hmmm … any kid-friendly-lines in Polyphonic Spree, I wonder?
